Betting in South Africa: key facts
| Minimum age | 18 |
|---|---|
| Regulator | Land-based casinos in South Africa are licensed by provincial gambling authorities; gambling in the Free State is regulated by the Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority, with the National Gambling Board overseeing the system nationally. |
South Africa runs a split regime. Land-based casinos are lawful and provincially licensed, and betting on sport and horse racing with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board is lawful online. Interactive online casino games — slots, roulette, blackjack and live-dealer tables played over the internet — are not licensed in South Africa. Gambling is for persons 18 years and older.
Planning a first visit
- Set the destination to the corner of Stateway and Buiten Street, Welkom 9460 — the casino shares its site with Goldfields Mall in the middle of town.
- Bring an accepted identity document: only persons 18 years and older are permitted to gamble, and staff can ask for proof at any time.
- Check the day's trading hours on +27 57 391 5708 before a late drive — published listings disagree, and closing time is later on Fridays and Saturdays than midweek.
- Decide your budget before you walk onto the floor and treat it as the price of an evening out, not as money you expect back.
- Ask at the Tsogo Rewards desk if you want the loyalty card — it is swiped at machines and tables and is not an account on any website.
- Travelling from out of town? Welkom lies about 140 km north-east of Bloemfontein on the R30, and there is no hotel inside the casino itself.

What this guide is, and what it is not
This page is written for people planning a visit to a physical casino in the Free State. It is independent: it is not the venue's website, it takes no bookings, and it quotes no promotional amounts, because those rotate from season to season and a figure copied from an old poster helps nobody.
Goldfields Casino stands in the middle of Welkom, sharing its site with Goldfields Mall. It is operated by Tsogo Sun and licensed as a land-based casino by the relevant provincial gambling authority; gambling in the Free State is regulated by the Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority. Licence numbers are deliberately not printed here.
The rest of the guide answers what people actually type: what the door asks for on our getting-in page, what the dealers deal on the live tables page, and how money moves on the paying-on-site page.
Where South African law draws the line
Land-based casinos in South Africa are lawful and licensed province by province, with 9 provincial authorities issuing casino licences under the National Gambling Act of 2004. Online, the country allows betting on sport and horse racing with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board, while interactive online casino games are not licensed. The National Gambling Board restated that position publicly in February 2026.
That is why this guide describes a building rather than an account, and why the pages about an app, a promo code and Aviator all end at the same place: those products belong to a different, unlicensed category, not to the venue on Stateway.
What else is on the site
The gaming floor in numbers
| Slot machines | 250 across the main floor, the smoking area and the Salon Prive |
|---|---|
| Table games | 9 — blackjack, roulette and Raise 'Em Poker |
| Gaming areas | 3, with the Salon Prive reserved for higher limits |
| Electronic gaming | eHost terminals appear in the venue's own gaming listings |
| Gaming space | About 80,730 square feet, roughly 7,500 square metres |
| Minimum age | 18 |
Counts are the figures published for the venue and can change as the floor is reconfigured.
How the floor is divided
Main gaming floor
The bulk of the 250 machines plus the open table pit, with staff and a cash desk within sight.
Smoking area
A separated gaming section for smokers, so the main floor stays smoke-free.
Salon Prive
The higher-limit room; access is arranged at the venue rather than through any online form.
Amusement arcade
Coin-operated games for families — entertainment rather than gambling, and away from the tables.
Tsogo Rewards, in one paragraph
Tsogo Rewards is the loyalty programme of the group that operates Goldfields. It is a physical card, issued at a desk inside the venue, swiped at machines and handed to the host at tables so that play is recorded.
- Recorded play earns points and entries into the promotions running at the venue.
- The card is a group programme, so it is recognised at other Tsogo Sun properties, not only in Welkom.
- It carries no cash balance: it records, it does not hold money.
- Cards and queries are handled in person at the rewards desk, and by phone on +27 57 391 5708.
- Membership is for persons 18 years and older.

The venue and the town
Welkom was proclaimed a town in 1948 and built on gold: mining leases granted in the 1940s turned open highveld into a planned city of wide roads and traffic circles, and the goldfields gave both the district and this casino their name.
Goldfields Casino opened on 4 December 2003 and has traded from the same corner ever since, operated within the Tsogo Sun group. It was built into the town's retail heart rather than on a resort estate, which is why the entrance is a few steps from a shopping mall rather than a hotel lobby.
- Opened: 4 December 2003
- Town proclaimed: 1948
- Province: Free State, Lejweleputswa District
- Operator: Tsogo Sun
